In Afghanistan

WLP launched the Cross-Border Coalitions for Gender Justice (CCGJ) initiative to connect women activists in Afghanistan and diaspora communities, building stronger, more sustainable gender justice movements. In collaboration with Afghan and Iranian leaders, the program supports their advocacy for human rights through training, workshops, and mentorship, fostering leadership and cross-movement alliances in repressive societies.

Additionally, WLP supports youth-led gender equality efforts in Afghanistan, equipping young women with the skills to advocate for their rights amid rising oppression. By fostering transnational coalitions, WLP strengthens mentorship and coordinated advocacy to sustain the fight for gender equality.

In response to the Taliban’s takeover, WLP has facilitated high-level discussions, including at the UN Commission on the Status of Women NGO Forum, bringing together Afghan and Iranian leaders to discuss sustaining women’s rights movements and using technology to support activists in closed societies.

Programs and Accomplishments

  • Launched the Cross-Border Coalitions for Gender Justice (CCGJ) initiative to connect women activists in-country and in diaspora communities for sustainable gender justice movements.
  • Developed trusted networks of communication and grassroots movement-building strategies co-created by local activists and civil society leaders in exile.
  • Structured targeted leadership training, advocacy tools, and psychosocial support for Afghan women and youth leaders.
  • Created a collection of multi-language manuals covering leadership, human rights advocacy, movement-building, digital safety, and power analysis.
  • Organized expert roundtable discussions on themes such as inclusive leadership, economic empowerment, technology in advocacy, gender equality in law, climate justice, and resilience-building.

I hope to one day bear witness to justice and freedom in Afghanistan. And that all...live in an environment of freedom, justice and to have access to all of their basic rights without any discrimination and without any restriction.
