Sarabi (Afghanistan) is a hematologist, politician and reformer of the post-Taliban reconstruction of Afghanistan. In her youth, she studied medicine at university and was awarded a fellowship by the World Health Organization which took her to India as she completed her studies in hematology and in 2005, Sarabi became the first woman to be appointed as a provincial governor. She has also previously served as the Minister for Women’s Affairs and the Minister of Culture and Education in Afghanistan where she played a key role in promoting women rights and environmental issues.

Rights and Resistance: Supporting Calls for Freedom and Equality in Afghanistan and Iran (video, English)
The calls for women’s human rights in Iran and Afghanistan require coordinated action by the international community. On March 10, as part of the UN Commission on the Status of Women NGO Forum, WLP will brought together Iranian and Afghan women leaders to share ways to assist movements for women’s rights inside and outside the countries.

On October 15, 2021, WLP hosted a discussion with Former Minister for Women’s Affairs in Afghanistan Sima Samar and Former Governor of Bamyan Province Habiba Sarabi, moderated by Former UNFPA Executive Director Thoraya Obaid and WLP Founder and President Mahnaz Afkhami. The discussion focused on their experiences as women leaders and human rights advocates in Afghanistan and what can be done to support women and girls.
