Women’s Learning Partnership Endorses the Call for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty

Women’s Learning Partnership (WLP) has formally endorsed the call for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty (FFNPT), a global initiative advocating for a planned, equitable, and just phase-out of coal, oil, and gas.

The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty complements existing climate frameworks by explicitly addressing fossil fuel supply through international cooperation. The Treaty is grounded in three core pillars: non-proliferation of new fossil fuel development, a fair and managed phase-out of existing production, and a just transition that ensures no worker, community, or country is left behind. These principles strongly align with WLP’s rights-based, gender-responsive approach to climate justice.

WLP’s work has long emphasized the central role of women’s leadership, movement power, and community-driven solutions in shaping sustainable and equitable responses to the climate crisis. WLP views the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty as a critical intervention that addresses the root drivers of climate change while advancing global accountability and justice.

This endorsement comes at a moment of escalating climate impacts worldwide, as fossil fuel production continues despite scientific consensus on the urgent need to limit its use. The Treaty initiative has mobilized a growing coalition of governments, civil society organizations, academics, health professionals, indigenous leaders, and community advocates working together to build momentum for a global mechanism that addresses fossil fuel supply alongside demand.

The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty initiative is led by longtime WLP Advisor Kumi Naidoo. WLP has engaged in ongoing dialogue with the initiative to explore the Treaty’s vision and its relevance to feminist movements worldwide.
