As we celebrate 25 years of advancing gender justice, Women’s Learning Partnership (WLP) reflects on a journey of collaboration, resilience, and transformative impact. For a quarter of a century, our Partnership of women’s rights organizations across the Global South has built grassroots movements, dismantled barriers to equality, tackled intersectional challenges, and empowered women to take the lead in shaping their communities and their futures. This milestone is a testament to the dedicated work of our partners and the unwavering support of our donors and advocates who have been instrumental in our story.
Today, we are thrilled to officially launch our 25th Anniversary Campaign: ‘Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers.’ Throughout this landmark year, we will celebrate our collective accomplishments, renew our commitment to driving lasting change, and harness the lessons we’ve learned to build a world where gender equality is fully realized. Join us in honoring this pivotal achievement as we continue to shape a brighter, more inclusive future.
How We Change the World
Launched at the dawn of the new millennium, WLP brought in the 21st century with a bold vision: a just world that promotes and protects human rights and gender equality. Leveraging the power of collective action and shared learning, we draw on our diverse experiences and expertise to build innovative solutions that center women’s voices and leadership. It is through our collaboration that the Partnership has been able to produce flexible training curricula adaptable to a variety of contexts, provide more than 900 web-based resources in 30+ local languages, and offer workshops on a wide range of human rights, leadership development, and capacity building skills across the globe.
Our transformational approach has delivered maximum impact in communities where it is most needed while remaining acutely attuned to evolving local and global contexts. For 25 years, our Partnership has significantly strengthened grassroots women’s leadership, shifting power and resources to local women and mobilizing feminist movements to advance women’s autonomy and opportunities. By building local coalitions to advocate for change, we have successfully reformed laws on family rights, land rights, citizenship rights, gender-based violence, and economic autonomy.
Through our training workshops and educational campaigns, we have helped to spread awareness of rights and ensure legal access and accountability when those rights are abused. Our leadership development programming has played a pivotal role in women’s empowerment as participants subsequently take on leadership positions in their societies. Our close-knit Partnership mentors and supports emerging leaders and newly established organizations to become dynamic changemakers in their communities. We also employ creative methods and survivor-centered perspectives to provide psychosocial support to those facing gender-based violence and other crises. From addressing personal trauma to sensitizing institutions to gender-based violence, WLP’s work tackles gender inequity in all its forms.
Utilizing an inclusive and locally-centered approach to train women at the forefront of today’s most pressing issues has allowed us to extend our impact exponentially. Many of our workshop participants have since spearheaded peacebuilding efforts, climate adaptation strategies, and women's rights initiatives in their own communities, often passing on their firsthand knowledge to future generations.
As we collectively navigate the current existential uncertainties of climate change, democratic decline, and shrinking civic spaces, we are launching new programs to further engage and empower women, especially the next generation of leaders, as they prepare to tackle the crises that lie ahead. We also remain committed to continuing our work in addressing the root causes of gender inequality and positioning women across the world to take on leadership roles, respond to complex crises and natural disasters, and combat laws, policies, and social norms that limit their full participation in society.
Gender justice is a multifaceted issue that demands intersectional solutions. The fight for true equality requires dismantling entrenched local and global systems of oppression through collective action.
