From March 10–21, 2025, government officials, international policy leaders, and civil society activists will gather in New York for the 69th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69). During the session, Member States will assess the challenges affecting the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action and the progress toward gender equality, women's empowerment, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
We invite you to explore Women’s Learning Partnership’s CSW69 events, which highlight the priorities of civil society organizations advancing women’s rights globally. These discussions will focus on accelerating gender equality by supporting youth-led movements, fostering transnational coalitions, and strengthening feminist leadership amid rising backlash. Highlighting efforts in Afghanistan, Iran, Brazil, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Indonesia, these panels explores how mentorship and movement-building can advance women’s political leadership and democratic resilience.

Building Cross Border Coalitions for Gender Justice in Afghanistan and Iran

As women’s rights are being rolled back globally, we are witnessing young women in the most repressive corners of the Muslim majority world courageously demanding fundamental freedoms and respect for their human rights in the face of oppression, patriarchal backlash, renewed bans on societal participation, and rising rates of violence and intimidation. This panel will share takeaways from the launch of an innovative program to support youth-led gender equality efforts and movements in their local contexts within Afghanistan and Iran.
We will showcase the significance of building resilient transnational coalitions and campaigns among youth activists and aspiring women leaders in-country and in the diaspora at such a pivotal political moment. The panelists will draw from historical and current efforts of creating spaces for exchange, support, and mentorship on sustained gender egalitarian movement building and feminist leadership.

As we mark the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, which flagged women’s fair representation in political office as an area of urgent action, women remain severely underrepresented in politics. Studies show that women’s political leadership not only promotes gender equality but also strengthens democratic institutions and enhances societal well-being. This interactive panel discussion showcases the work of feminist civil society organizations in Brazil, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Indonesia in fostering women’s leadership across all levels of political engagement. We will discuss challenges and opportunities during this time of backlash to women’s rights, rising rates of gender-based political violence, and the potential for accelerating women’s political leadership through structured mentorship programs.
