The UNDP's Gender Inequality Index is designed to reveal the extent to which national human development achievements are eroded by gender inequality. It is a composite measure reflecting inequality in achievements between women and men in three dimensions: reproductive health (maternal mortality ratio and adolescent fertility rate), empowerment (share of parliamentary seats, and secondary and higher education attainment levels) and the labour market (women's participation in the work force). It varies between zero (when women and men fare equally) and one (when men or women fare poorly compared to the other in all dimensions). 3. The UNDP's Human Development Index (HDI) is a summary composite index that measures a country's average achievements in three basic aspects of human development: health, knowledge, and income. It was created to emphasize that people and their capabilities should be the ultimate criteria for assessing the development of a country, not economic growth alone. 4. Vulnerable employment is a Millenium Development Goal (MDG) 1B indicator; vulnerable employments are lower productivity and informal activities such as own-account workers and unpaid family workers. They are therefore more likely to lack benefi ts associated with decent employment, such as adequate social security and recourse to effective mechanisms for social dialogue. Vulnerable employment is often characterized by inadequate earnings, low productivity and substandard working conditions that undermine fundamental labour rights.

Although the Constitution of Zimbabwe provides for gender balance in decision-making and power, many women and girls are still unaware of their rights and how to exercise them. In response, WLP’s partner in Zimbabwe, Women’s Self-Promotion Movement (WSPM), convened 24 participants from the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, Gender and Community Development, Women’s NGOs, academics and professional women to discuss how they can transform power relations in all spheres of life.

Join WLP in the worldwide campaign to end gender-based violence.On November 25, 2015, Women's Learning Partnership joins the Center for Women’s Global Leadership (CWGL) at Rutgers University, along with over 5,478 organizations and other participants from 187 countries and territories, in the launch of the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign. The 2015 Campaign theme, From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Make Education Safe for All, highlights the increase of violent attacks against women and girls who claim their right to education, and the continued barriers to women's and girls' education across the globe. The WLP leadership and political participation curriculum reached over 1400 women, men, youth, civil society workers, and government employees in the past year through trainings implemented by WLP Zimbabwe/Women’s Self Promotion Movement (WSPM) and other civil society organizations in Zimbabwe trained by WSPM. This spread of WLP’s grassroots workshops is a cascading effect of a recent WLP Training of Trainers Institute (TOT) held in Harare, Zimbabwe by WSPM in February 2013.

On March 8, 2014, International Women’s Day, in Fizi Centre, South Kivu province, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), nearly 3000 women, men, and youth participated in a public march marking the beginning of the “Mouvement Asma Khader,” and calling for an end to the impunity of perpetrators of gender-based violence in their communities. “Mouvement Asma Khader” is an activist network that was created by the DRC-based NGO Action des Femmes a la Non-Violence (AFNV), and dedicated to fighting gender-based violence in DRC.

Patricia McFadden is a sociologist, activist, and scholar who has worked in the antiapartheid movement for over 20 years. She has taught at universities since 1976 and is the former director of the Feminist Studies Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe. She is a visiting scholar at the Five College Women’s Studies Research Center based at Mount Holyoke College in Amherst, Massachusetts, where she is writing a book on feminism and nationalism. She is the former editor of the Southen African Feminist Review and present editor of African Feminist Perspectives.
