Representing over half of the world's population, women are crucial, but still often overlooked representatives of their families, communities, and cultures in achieving a fully informed, engaged, and democratic electorate. With a number of upcoming national and municipal elections taking place around the world, we hope to continue to celebrate and build upon recent breakthroughs, ranging from the record percentage of women now serving in Rwanda's parliament to the 2009 election of four women into the parliament of Kuwait--the first women to accomplish this.

The conference brought together WLP Partners and more than 500 democracy activists, practitioners, and scholars, providing an important opportunity for learning, exchange, and networking with civil society actors from across the world.

Following five years of mobilization by women of collective lands (Soulaliyates) in Morocco, with the tireless support of WLP Morocco/Association Démocratique des Femmes du Maroc (ADFM), and after the publication of two ministerial circulars (July 2009 and October 2010) recognizing the right of women to compensation related to land sales, on March 30, 2012 the Ministry of Interior released a new circular (Circular 17).
