Foundation for the Support of Women's WorkKadın Emeğini Değerlendirme Vakfı (KEDV) or Foundation for the Support of Women's Work (FSWW) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization established in 1986. Its aim is to support low-income women's groups to improve the quality of their lives, their communities and their leadership. KEDV/FSWW works in Istanbul, the Marmara earthquake region, and southeastern Turkey. The organization also provides support in consultancy, training, and monitoring to those local governments, NGOs and others who want to integrate KEDV/FSWW programs into their activities.

KEDV/FSWW:

  • Recognizes grassroots women's expertise and their power in struggling with poverty and building their lives and their communities, and their rights to define and solve their problems;
  • Respects grassroots women's own values and avoids alienating them from themselves and their communities;
  • Believes that equal participation of women in social, economic and political decision making processes can only be realized at community and local levels and seeks cooperation of local governments and other actors in society;
  • Works with grassroots women's groups in solidarity as equal partners. KEDV/FSWW's programs are rooted in the synergy of women.

Training New Facilitators in Turkey

May 2007: WLP Turkey/Foundation for the Support of Women’s Work (FSWW) conducted a National Training of Trainers Institute for five women in Çorlu city, all of whom had previously participated in a leadership training workshop.

All of the women were employed and had graduated from university. They worked as volunteers in the women’s cooperatives. The training explored topics such as: the condition of women in Turkey and worldwide, the importance of tolerance and embracing diversity, obstacles to communication, and methods for working with grassroots women. Participants also discussed the role of a good leader and effective facilitation.

Snapshot of Leadership Workshops in 2005

Here are some examples of leadership training workshops that took place in 2005. These stories offer a sampling of the different themes present in WLP's leadership workshops.

Leadership Workshop in Mbouda, Cameroon, December 12-14, 2005
Thirty-two women and two men, predominantly engaged in small-scale subsistence farming, attended the workshop. They identified strategies for tackling the challenges they face in agricultural production, and decided to raise awareness in their communities about the rights of peasant farmers.

Leadership Workshop in Kaédi, Mauritania, November 9-11, 2005
Thirty leaders of women's rights organizations from each department of Kaédi, the capital of the remote Gorgol region, attended the workshop. Participants identified the need for stronger bonds of solidarity between women's organizations operating in the same region, and committed to forming a network, to be coordinated by WLP's Mauritanian partner.
