Women's Learning Partnership: 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence 2016

 

16 Days 2016 WLP


From November 25 to December 10, 2016, WLP partners from all over the globe will organize and participate in workshops, film screenings, and events during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. 

Since its inception in 1991, this annual campaign has drawn more than 5,000 participants from over 180 countries. This year's theme, From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Make Education Safe for All, highlights violence as a barrier to women's and girls' education.

Brazil - CEPIA - Seminar: Zika Virus and Women's Reproductive Rights
CEPIA will host this seminar as a “warm up” to 16 Days. Participants will include representatives from other Brazilian organizations in São Paulo, Brasilia, Recife and Rio de Janeiro (Anis, Clam, Gestos and Instituto Patricia Galvão, and the Municipal Department of Health Rio de Janeiro).

Jordan - SIGI/J - Documentary screening and panel discussion
A screening of "The Time of the Butterflies" followed by a panel discussion on the national efforts to combat violence against women in Jordan. 

Senegal - GIPS/WAR - Forum: Social Mobilization in Thiar Fiaye

Morocco - ADFM - Press statement on key reform areas to end violence against women
Three key action areas are highlighted in this press statement: (1) launch the process of reform of the Family Code so that it is consistent with the constitution and Morocco's international commitments; (2) review and develop the law on violence against women; (3) comprehensive reform of the penal legislation that answers to the reality of violence and discrimination and lifts all restrictions on women's fundamental rights and freedoms.

 

November 25

Senegal - GIPS/WAR - Round Table of Women Leaders in Thies

Morocco - ADFM - Sit-in demonstration in front of parliament in Rabat 
The aim of this sit-in is to denounce the intransigence of the government and the absence of political commitment to eliminate GBV. Participants demanded that the government take all legislative and institutional measures to eliminate violence against women.

Jordan - SIGI/J - Grassroots workshop in Amman: Cancel Article 308
One of 16 grassroots workshop conducted during the 16 Days of Activism by SIGI/J. During the workshops, activists will be given skills to target decision-makers who can push for the cancelation of Article 308 of the Penal Code, which exempts perpetrators of sexual assault from punishment if they marry their victims.

Educational session for 15 talented painters to encourage them to paint works that would reflect the risks, situations, and accomplishments related to Article 308. The final products will be used in the project’s activities for public educational purposes.

Mauritania- AFCF - Anti-discrimination rally in Nouakchott
AFCF collaborates with the Panos Institute for West Africa (PIWA) to raise awarenesss and highlight the successes of a campaign against gender-based violence funded by the European Union.

 

November 29

Brazil - CEPIA - Workshop: Violence Against Women
CEPIA will conduct a workshop in partnership with BR Social to discuss topics concerning violence against women with youth from low-income communities of Rio de Janeiro. Date subject to change.

A look at the "Najat" project and the general progress women have achieved in combating violence around the world.

Kyrgyzstan- Bir Duino - Screening of documentary I Am Not Afraid to Say
Screenings for youth students at schools in Ak-Orgo and Kok-Jar followed by group discussion about the reasons and repercussions of sexual abuse with the filmmaker and subject of film in order to provide education and civic participation to vulnerable groups to fight gender based violence. Participation by the Bir Duino Youth Parliament, staff of the family recover center Alternativa, and the Head of Inspection on Minors Rights, the Main Department of Public Security of Ministry of Inner Affairs.
