WLP Activities in Conjunction with the AWID Forum 2012

This April, WLP travelled to Istanbul for a series of important convenings, organized in conjunction with the Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID) Forum. Given the urgent need to protect and advance women’s rights during this period of political upheaval in the Middle East/North Africa (MENA), for two days prior to the Forum, WLP, in collaboration with AWID and the Global Fund for Women, convened roughly one hundred activists, from 18 MENA countries and 40 countries throughout the globe, for intensive strategy sessions on democratic transition and leveraging opportunities for women’s rights in the current environment.

During the pre-forum meetings, participants engaged in critical analyses and debates, listened to expert presentations, shared lessons learned and best practices, and worked collectively to begin developing strategies for capitalizing on the political transformations sweeping the region.

Also prior to the Forum, WLP also held our Transnational Partners Convening attended by representatives from across the Partnership. Over the course of three days, partners discussed their most pressing local concerns, and how the Partnership can best advance our mission, particularly in light of the momentous changes occurring in many partner countries.

During the Forum, WLP held several intensive strategy sessions that built upon the pre-forum sessions. Speakers shared key points from the previous days, and attendees participated in breakout sessions to further analyze issues and develop strategies according to their local context.

At the Forum WLP also held a panel discussion on religious fundamentalism and women’s rights and a workshop on using social media to advance women’s rights, political participation, and democratic values.
