Emmi's Journey: 2,200 Miles for Global Women's Rights!

March 6, 2015

WLP is thrilled and honored to announce that Emmi Laasko is thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail to raise awareness and funds to advance women's rights across the globe! On March 31, 2015, Emmi is setting off on a solo thru-hike traversing all 2,200 miles of the Appalachian Trail. You can follow her journey on Facebook here and donate to support her journey here!

What does thru-hiking have to do with women's rights?

The Appalachian Trail (AT) is approximately 2,200 miles long extending from Georgia to Maine, USA, passing through 14 states on the east coast.* Every year, between 1,800 and 2,000 people attempt to thru-hike (walk the entire distance in a continuous journey) the AT, but only 1 in 4 of them successfully completes this physically and psychologically demanding journey, and only about 25 percent of those hikers are women.

Although according to this NIH study, no significant differences exist between the experiences of women and men backpackers, women are especially hesitant to hike the trail (as discussed here and here), fearing the risk of sexual assault and harassment among other personal safety concerns.

But some women hope to change the statistics by bringing attention to the facts and stereotypes surrounding women solo thru-hiking and women’s empowerment globally.

We invite you to join WLP in supporting Emmi Laakso to be among the steadily increasing numbers of women to solo thru-hike the Appalachian Trail.

Emmi will start her thru-hike on March 31, 2015, hoping that her journey will inspire more women to go after their dreams in spite of their fears, and to raise awareness for global women’s rights.

Throughout the journey, Emmi will regularly post updates such as pictures, stories, thoughts, and challenges, and describe her experiences as a female solo thru-hiker.

You can support Emmi on her journey by:

  • Following and sharing the Emmi’s Journey Facebook Page and sharing your thoughts/questions on Emmi’s updates.
  • Circulating the Emmi’s Journey webpage among your network and encouraging them to become supporters.
  • DONATE to help Emmi and Women’s Learning Partnership inspire women across the globe to be leaders and pursue their dreams. Emmi's goal is to raise about $2 per mile hiked, and to spread awareness and support for the ongoing struggle for gender justice -- on the trail, in the community, and across all levels of society.
