The UNDP's Gender Inequality Index is designed to reveal the extent to which national human development achievements are eroded by gender inequality. It is a composite measure reflecting inequality in achievements between women and men in three dimensions: reproductive health (maternal mortality ratio and adolescent fertility rate), empowerment (share of parliamentary seats, and secondary and higher education attainment levels) and the labour market (women's participation in the work force). It varies between zero (when women and men fare equally) and one (when men or women fare poorly compared to the other in all dimensions). 3. The UNDP's Human Development Index (HDI) is a summary composite index that measures a country's average achievements in three basic aspects of human development: health, knowledge, and income. It was created to emphasize that people and their capabilities should be the ultimate criteria for assessing the development of a country, not economic growth alone. 4. Vulnerable employment is a Millenium Development Goal (MDG) 1B indicator; vulnerable employments are lower productivity and informal activities such as own-account workers and unpaid family workers. They are therefore more likely to lack benefi ts associated with decent employment, such as adequate social security and recourse to effective mechanisms for social dialogue. Vulnerable employment is often characterized by inadequate earnings, low productivity and substandard working conditions that undermine fundamental labour rights.

The curriculum’s three DVDs, dubbed in Arabic, use the voices of well-known actors from Jordan and the region to share new concepts in a familiar idiom. The curriculum includes a training handbook and three guides that provide interactive, scenario-based activities. Examples of participatory and democratic learning throughout the curriculum enable human rights and democracy activists, educators, women leaders, and facilitators to learn how to implement successful advocacy campaigns, communicate effectively with the media, and train trainers.

The Equality without Reservation campaign is a regional campaign covering the MENA and Gulf Region. All Arab States have signed and ratified CEDAW but under so many reservations that the purpose of the convention is defeated. We understand this to mean that Arab states have never meant to implement CEDAW hence the numerous reservations they have institutionalised to block any possible useful implementation.

Naciri explains that "the importance of CEDAW is that it is a common and coherent tool for implementation [of women’s rights] and for measuring progress. Thus, women and human rights organizations need to mobilize to ensure that CEDAW and other Human Rights conventions are duly and truthfully implemented within each country. This implies that positive changes and transformation are brought in at the level of women's lives, conditions and positions."

CRTD-A released a memo on July 14th, 2008 addressing the new government and urging it to commit to implementing the CEDAW agreement, particularly section 2 of Article 9 stating equality in transferring nationality to children. The memo pointed out regional success in countries participating in the campaign such as Algeria’s success in lifting reservations on Article 9 of CEDAW and Egypt and Morocco’s successes in law reform granting women the right to pass on their nationality to their children. They urged the Lebanese government to follow in the footsteps of these countries.

The new technology tools were extremely popular because they offer small, resource-strapped organizations the means to advocate for women's rights. One participant is now using her new skills to promote her women's cooperative products online. The eCourse focuses on five themes from WLP’s seminal work, Leading to Choices: A Leadership Training Handbook for Women: developing participatory and personal leadership skills; communicating persuasively; creating a shared vision; and mobilizing resources. WLP convened the Institute to create an opportunity for women activists in the region to develop skills in participatory leadership, facilitation, communications, and advocacy, building their capacity as leaders. In a role play on communicating with the media, participants took on the role of guests in a TV talk show, defending contrasting points of view. "One should not treat interacting with the media as an exam, but simply as a means of getting across a message and building public support for your goals," said Moroccan partner Amina Lemrini.

Afifa Arsanios is the Advisor to the Minister of Culture and Education in Beirut, Lebanon and a former diplomat in the Lebanese Foreign Service. She has held a number of diplomatic positions in international agencies including the UN General Assembly, the World Bank, and the UN Development Program. Ms. Arsanios is an Advisor to the Women's Learning Partnership and the Global Fund for Women. In 1994, she founded a chapter of the Sisterhood is Global Institute in Lebanon, establishing training programs in women's human rights for Muslim women in the Bekaa Valley.
