Celebrating Elections in India and Kuwait

India and Kuwait went to polls recently. At the end of it, two countries in two different regions have achieved one common result: more women winning elections and entering legislative chambers.

India: Last week’s general elections have sent 58 women to the parliament. This is a historic high number in India where the percentage of women representatives in the parliament has crossed into the double digits for the first time.

Kuwait: Elections concluded yesterday have been the cause of jubilation across the country and the world. This is the first time ever that women are entering the parliament in Kuwait, and the euphoria that has greeted the four women who won is captured in “Kuwait: Election History: Four Women Win Parliament Seats” blog roundup on Global Voices.

India’s 58 women MPs are only 10.5% of the 550 parliamentarians while the four winners make up only 8% of Kuwait’s 50-member parliament. As activists we still have a long way to go in our work to increase women’s political participation.

However, today is the day we pause to celebrate our successes in two different parts of the world. And, to congratulate our colleagues in India and Kuwait.

Congratulations!!!!! to women in India and Kuwait. No place in the land is going to remain untouched by change in favour of women’s political promotion, the essence of democracy in many Asian and African countries.

Whatever is the progress it’s far better than a stuquo or setback. We’re all sure the wave of change is irreversible. Let’s cross our fingers.
