Press Release: Women’s Learning Partnership Joins #GivingTuesday Movement to Strengthen Global Gender Equality

November 20, 2017

[Bethesda, MD] [11/20/17] – Women’s Learning Partnership (WLP) will participate in #GivingTuesday, an annual day of giving that celebrates global generosity, on November 28.

#GivingTuesday falls after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, jump-starting the holiday giving season and inspiring support for non-profit causes. WLP will ask for contributions to bolster its work to end gender-based violence, advocate for human rights and increase women’s political participation around the world.

Women around the world share aspirations for just laws, equal access to education, non-discriminatory health services, and other human rights. WLP provides women at the grassroots level in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East with the tools and resources to make change in their societies. This past year, WLP organizations were instrumental in:

Reforming a law in Jordan that allowed rapists to marry their victims to avoid punishment.

Educating politicians in Kazakhstan on human rights and women’s rights issues in advance of elections.

Building the capacities of Syrian refugee women in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey.

Training indigenous women in Malaysia to become advocates for the rights of their community.

Advocating for land ownership rights for women in Morocco and Senegal.

Campaigning to increase women’s representation in the media in Pakistan.

Creating a documentary film on discriminatory family laws—like those that permit child marriage, domestic violence or honor crimes—to educate the public and equip activists.

WLP’s work in these areas is critical to address the roots of discrimination against women and their rights; recent statistics show that 35 percent of women worldwide have experienced gender-based violence, and only 23 percent of all national parliamentarians are women.

“WLP believes that the aspirations of women across the world include the common goals of equality, tolerance, democracy, human rights, justice and celebration of diversity,” said WLP Founder and President Mahnaz Afkhami.
