Centres de TICRural communities in six countries benefit from WLP IT Centers, where they can train and build their skills on email and the internet, office productivity software, and computer basics. For many training participants, IT centers provide their first opportunity to interact with a computer, or connect to the internet. Fees are kept at a minimum for training to reach the most disempowered of populations, and women are especially welcome. The centers are run by WLP partner organizations. The services and training available in the centers are in large demand, and the number of IT centers is growing. The profiles of centers differ in order to take into account the local context. Certain locations are burdened by unreliable electricity supply. IT centers are part of WLP’s ICT capacity building program, which aims to harness ICT for the empowerment of women, and for collective mobilization and advocacy purposes. Not only do we endeavor to give women in the Global South access to ICT, but we also strive to help develop relevant content, to increase women’s ICT skills and confidence, and to extend their participation as producers of content and ICT technicians. |
