Training Curriculum

"Leading to Choices is a valuable tool for women's empowerment all over the world. No other such manual I have seen offers itself to self-adaptation and self-application by women and men, respecting the diversity of their needs and situations."
- Nancy Flowers, author and human rights educator

Training Manuals

In cooperation with partners, WLP produces culture-specific training manuals designed for use by women's organizations in the Global South. The prototype manual is produced in collaboration with partner organizations and tested extensively in trial workshops. WLP and partner organizations then work closely together to produce adaptations of the prototype, ensuring that the adapted manuals suit the linguistic, religious, and socio-cultural conditions of the diverse communities where training will take place. Each adaptation undergoes additional testing in leadership workshops with the intended participant group and is revised prior to publication on the basis of participant and facilitator feedback.

The manuals use interactive exercises based on real-life scenarios. These scenarios are revised or supplemented by scenarios to suit the needs of the training participants and to allow the facilitator flexibility.

Leading To Choices: A Leadership Training Handbook for Women

WLP's signature training manual, Leading to Choices: A Leadership Training Handbook for Women, is designed to train diverse groups of women in the practice of inclusive, participatory, and horizontal leadership. The goal is to empower women to take on leadership roles in their families, communities, and societies.

The manual is based on the premise that good leadership relies on the ability to communicate, listen, build consensus, and work in partnership with allies to develop a collective vision and implement an action plan. Sharing power and respect creates a strong group identity that both empowers individuals to achieve personal goals and mobilizes the group for collective action.

Leading to Choices has been used in interactive training workshops with thousands of participants in 18 countries in the Global South, including women activists, academics, domestic workers, factory workers, NGO leaders, politicians, refugees, students, and indigenous women.

The handbook is currently available in the following languages: Arabic (Shamy), Arabic (Maghreby), Assamese, English, French, Hausa, Malay, Meiteilon, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Shona, Spanish, Swahili, Turkish, and Uzbek.

Multimedia Curriculum

Leading to Choices: A Multimedia Curriculum for Leadership Learning

The Leading to Choices Multimedia Curriculum builds on the successes of the manual, providing additional materials to enrich leadership training programs.  The Multimedia Curriculum consists of three video cassettes with accompanying guides which contain interactive, scenario-based activities and illustrative examples of how to create participatory and democratic learning environments, how to implement successful advocacy campaigns, and how to develop compelling messages for target audiences.

These innovative materials are tailored for human rights and democracy activists, educators, women leaders, and facilitators who seek to engage in their own leadership development and increase women's agency for achieving their social, economic, and legal rights.
