Leading to Choices: A Leadership Training Handbook for Women (Russian Edition)
Leading to Choices: A Leadership Training Handbook for Women (2003) (132 pages) Authors: Mahnaz Afkhami, Ann Eisenberg, and Haleh Vaziri Using the Russian edition of Leading to Choices, Women's Resource Center of Tashkent (TWRC) organizes training of trainers programs for Uzbek women to enable them to conduct participatory and dialogue-based workshops. TWRC notes that the concept of horizontal, participatory leadership is not an easy topic for women living in a post-Soviet society to discuss, as they are accustomed to a system in which leaders are generally appointed and follow hierarchical communication styles. WLP's workshops have given Uzbek women a new sense of responsibility for their future and a desire to make decisions for themselves. Following one leadership training, a participant stated, "I now feel I have the inner strength and confidence to change my life--I will show my family that I believe in myself and that I can achieve my goals." Other workshops have resulted in the establishment of seven new non-governmental organizations for women's rights advocacy. Leading to Choices: A Leadership Training Handbook for Women (2003) (132 pages) Stories from the fieldLeadership Skills as a Pathway to Employment in KazakhstanMay 2008: WLP Kazakhstan/Shymkent Women’s Resource Center (SWRC) held two leadership workshops in April and May for twenty-nine women involved in SWRC’s vocational training programs. Workshop participants ranged in age from 19-57 years old. Most of SWRC’s vocational students, enrolled in three-month courses in sewing, bookkeeping, or computers, are unemployed and seeking opportunities to reenter the workplace. Although Kazakhstan has begun to achieve gender equality in education at the primary and secondary levels, women’s unemployment rates remain higher than those of men. The workforce itself reveals ongoing divisions based on gender stereotypes, giving women fewer opportunities.* WLP's Workshops Challenge Leadership Stereotypes in Lebanon and Traditional Gender Roles in Uzbek Media

Regional Learning Institute for Women's Leadership in Central Asia
The Institute took place amidst an atmosphere of heightened security and political tensions in the region. In the face of increasing restrictions on civil society and NGOs, human rights, and press freedom in the region, WLP brought participants together to create a regional network of women's rights advocates working to advance women in leadership and decision-making positions. |
