Egypt: discrimination continues despite law reform

Almost a million children born before the nationality law amendment in 2004 are disadvantaged because the law does not grant them the right to automatic naturalization. Children of Palestinian and Sudanese fathers are targets of specific discrimination.

رغم تغيير قانون الجنسية المصري في يوليو 2004 والذي ساوى بين المرأة والرجل في حق إعطاء الجنسية المصرية لأطفالهم، ما زالت الاستثناءات والتعقيدات الإجرائية تمنع الآلاف من التمتع بالمساواة بالجنسية، كما جاء في تقرير مرصد التمييز ضد النساء في مصر التابع لملتقى تنمية المرأة.

Discrimination Felt by Egyptian Women

Egypt’s new Nationality Law of 2004 states that whoever is born of an Egyptian mother is Egyptian. (However, for some children born before 2004) Nobody knows why the Egyptian Ministry of Interior refused to accept their applications for Egyptian citizenship.

One Step Closer to Creating Equality in Egypt

Prior to 2004, women who married foreign men were unable to confer citizenship on their children. In July 2004 the nationality law was reformed allowing Egyptian women married to non-nationals the right to pass on their nationality to their children, given that they meet certain requirements.
