A Lebanese Woman Speaks Up for Her Children
My name is Nawal Al-Chartouni Thomas, (known as Nina). I have two daughters of my previous two marriages. Both of my daughters are British citizens by birth. 6 years ago, I married an American, namely Michial Brent Thomas, in Beirut. Previous to this, we all know what happened with the nationalization decree which was busted and our monies disappeared in consequence.
My daughters lived in Lebanon for ten years and had to leave JUST because I was unable to give them the Lebanese nationality. It was the most unfair and horrific statement when I asked them to LEAVE ME. Especially when we heard that non Lebanese people are requesting and obtaining OUR nationality while OUR OWN kids and spouses are asked to leave or sign a document promising not to seek any job in the Lebanese territory.
My daughters ADORE Lebanon and in spite of all what is going on are heading to spend the Christmas and summer back HOME. Though I had to take them out in order for the two to carry on with their studies. We know that it is impossible for them to enroll in any university in Lebanon, because of their nationality. Plus we know that, once they graduate, it is impossible for them to work back in Lebanon because of their nationality too.
This is why I am signing this petition. Lebanon needs educated, young fresh blood. My eldest daughter just graduated from England in Business with high honours. My youngest is on the Honour list at school in the States. I have the RIGHT to request the Lebanese nationality for both of my daughters and husband. This residence permit should no longer be some condition hanging over our heads.
God only knows how much WE LOVE Lebanon!!! And we PRAY for OUR LAND! I want you to enlist me among your voices demanding women’s rights and I am truly appreciative for all your astonishing efforts.
God Bless you ALL.
Nina Thomas
