Despite all that has been accomplished to advance women’s human rights, far too many laws and policies reflect the stubborn persistence of gender injustice. One such law prevents Arab and Iranian women from conferring nationality on their children or foreign-born husbands. This is a denial of women’s political rights of citizenship — which is why I support the WLP’s campaign.

The equal citizenship right of women, is a basic human right that affects the well-being of women, children and spouses and their ability to enjoy other basic human rights: the right to education, labor, even marriage is some cases. ESCWA Centre for Women is working hard to bring the voices of affected women to political decision-makers in an advocacy effort to modify the discriminatory legislation. We are calling upon individual women from Arab countries to provide us with testimonies on how they are affected because of their deprivation of this right. These testimonies will be published in the first issue of the centre’s Arab Women’s Electronic Magazine. Please write to us at azzouni@un.org.
