My Experience with the New Nationality Code in Morocco

The new modified Nationality Code was released in the official bulletin on April 2, 2007. I did not read it until today– It was Madame Mezaldi who pointed it out to me. There was a meeting between the interior ministers who decided to put an end to the procedures, in order to make the process simpler.

When I went to Wilaya (Town Hall) to renew my daughter’s residency card, I learned that they stopped issuing these cards for Moroccan children on April 2, when the bulletin was released. There, I saw the official letter detailing the new changes.

In the administrative district, the response is to wait this week to see the proceedings.

The Department of Justice has said that the local administration is responsible for giving national identity cards for children.

Furthermore, there is no transitional phase for children born before the law, which is retroactive. The transition period of one year is for those who are born in Morocco, to parents also born in Morocco.
