Claiming Equal Citizenship

Equal citizenship is a fundamental human right that has been denied to women around the world over many centuries simply because they are female.

“Claiming Equal Citizenship: the Campaign for Arab Women’s Right to Nationality” is vital because it calls attention to how the denial of citizenship is used to subordinate women’s rights at the national level and works to make changes locally where it matters most.

The Center for Women’s Global Leadership is pleased to support this campaign for the most fundamental human rights of women and the work of WLP.

Nearly three dozen women representing 15 NGOs and six countries in the Middle East — Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, and Syria — gathered over four days from April 9-12 to discuss strategies for the Nationality Campaign. In Egypt, where the law was amended a few years ago, President of Forum for Women in Development, Mirvat Abu Tiej, explained “We are continually checking to make sure the law is being applied, and we have succeeded in taking to court and winning the right for women to give their nationality to their children if married to a Palestinian man.”
