The fourth podcast from the “Claiming Equal Citizenship” Campaign launch highlights the remarks of Asma Khader, General Coordinator of Sisterhood Is Global Institute/Jordan (SIGI/J).

P1000651Asma discusses the national laws in Jordan which relegate the transference of nationality to only Jordanian men. She draws attention to the culture of patriarchy which permeates Jordanian society. There is a lack of women’s involvement in politics in the country. Therefore there is no political will to to ensure that women who marry non-nationals are able to confer their nationality to their children. This creates many obstacles for women and children in Jordan.

Asma calls on men to participate in the campaign for equal citizenship rights, pointing out that “both men and women are affected by the discriminatory laws especially because the children impacted by the injustices they create belong both to women and men.”

Listen to Asma Khader’s launch remarks podcast.

Stay tuned for the next podcast with remarks by Azar Nafisi, the renowned author of Reading Lolita in Tehran and director of the Dialogue Project at Johns Hopkins University.
