My Children Will Not be Able to Inherit Our House and Land
My name is Suhaila Habib Awachi. I am Bahraini, happily married since 12 years to a German businessman. We have four children, Taha 11, Sarah 9, Yara 6 and Natalie 2 . All our kids are born in Bahrain and have never known any other home than Bahrain.
My husband and I are running a successful business here and have bought land and built a house for ourselves, all of which is written in my name. Since my children are non Bahrainis, I have to sponsor them until they are 18 years old. After that they will no longer be able to stay here. Should something happen to me and my husband, my children will not be able to inherit our house and land, as foreigners are not allowed to own land in the area where we live.
That is a big concern for me, not to mention the humiliation of having to regularly obtain visas for them as foreigners in their mothers land. On one occasion when our family wanted to travel on holidays, I was told at the airport to leave my then 5 year old daughter behind, as her resident permit had expired shortly before and we had overlooked to renew it.
