The Campaign for Arab Women’s Right to Nationality

My Son’s Identity

Filed under: Countries, Bahrain, Testimonies — christina at 4:57 pm on Saturday, September 2, 2006

It is frustrating to know that my seven month old son, in spite of having a Bahraini mother, cannot go to a public school, does not have access to a free health care facility, does not have access to inheritance rights and once he is 18, he has to be sponsored by someone to continue living here.

I feel that a person needs to keep their identity and at the same time be a part of wherever they are living. I am at a loss of how this happens when I cannot transfer my citizenship to my son. I am 24 years old and have been married to a British Muslim for two years.

How do I give my son his identity from both of his parents if Bahrain won’t recognize my nationality over my husbands?
