As promised in the earlier blog post, here is the first podcast from the international campaign launch event on Sep 6, 2006. The campaign launched with a panel discussion on “Women as Equal Citizens: Advocating for Change in Muslim-Majority Societies.”

Mahnaz Afkhami Introductory Speech at the Launch EventThis is the introductory speech by Mahnaz Afkhami, President & CEO of WLP. Mahnaz describes how “citizenship” started out as an abstract and inclusive concept. Many constitutions make no distinctions between male and female members of the society. However, the concept becomes masculine in reality and in practice.

Mahnaz also talks about how the citizenship campaign is an indigenous, community-based effort by the women’s organizations in six countries. WLP has taken on the international component of the campaign to reinforce and support their efforts.

We will be posting audio presentation from Lina Abou-Habib (CRTD.A, Lebanon) next. So, stay tuned…
