Claiming Equal Citizenship

The Campaign for Arab Women’s Right to Nationality

One Step Closer to Creating Equality in Egypt

In Egypt, women’s organizations were successful in their campaign to amend nationality laws. Prior to 2004, women who married foreign men were unable to confer citizenship on their children. In July 2004 the nationality law was reformed allowing Egyptian women married to non-nationals the right to pass on their nationality to their children, given that they meet certain requirements.

The Forum for Women in Development (FWID) is coordinating the regional campaign in Egypt. FWID and regional partners are monitoring the implementation of the reform. FWID brignts together a diverse group of activists who work together for women’s emancipation and the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women in order to contribute to building a democratic, just, and egalitarian society. FWID advocates for the reform of policies and legislation that discriminate against women.

Dear friends
As senior legal advisor, I deal often with citizenship of Egyptians setteled in the Netherlands. I know that the Egyptian law on citizenship changed few years ago. I have even the text of the new law.
What do you advice me to read to knaow more about how the new law is applied, the jurisprudence of Egyoptian courts. Which book (sharh qanoun al jinsiya) do I have to buy… Is there any site to get this information…?
Lots of succes for your work.
