The Campaign for Arab Women’s Right to Nationality

CRTD-A Collects Over 450 Signatures in Two Days

As part of the CRTD-A Nationality campaign’s action plans, a two day panel event was held at a University in Byblos in collaboration with the Women’s Rights Club on May 23 & 24, 2006.

The President of the Women’s Rights Club, Rania Jaber, opened the event with the announcement that the campaign had collected over 450 signatures.

The activities aimed to raise youth and university students’ awareness as well as involve them in the campaign and at the end of the two days, an unprecedented 414 signatures were collected.

On May 23, 2006, tables were set up on the campus consisting of several various campaign materials which were given out to students in addition to the petition which was signed by those who attended. Students were so enthusiastic about the first day’s events that many of them returned on the second day to hear the panel discussion.

On May 24, 2006, a panel discussion was held with the participation of

  • Dr. Eugene Sensenig, Professor at NDU
  • Dr. Ateka Hamed, Pediatrician – Lebanese woman married to an Indian man
  • Maitre Iqbal Doughan, Lawyer, social and legal activist, President of the Working Women’s League in Lebanon

The event brought increased recognition to the campaign and connected an ever-growing network of inviduals concerned about women’s equal citizenship rights in Lebanon.
