A NATIONWIDE campaign to give Bahraini women who marry foreigners the right to citizenship for their children and husbands will be officially launched on Wednesday night.

The campaign is being organised by the Bahrain Women’s Society (BWS) as part of a regional campaign being launched by women’s societies simultaneously in Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Morocco, Yemen, Tunis and Jordan.

BWS president Dr Wajeeha Al Baharna said this was one of the most important rights for women.

The society is collecting data on women married to non-Bahrainis and pushing for them to gain their full citizenship rights.

“Children of Bahraini women are treated as foreigners and are not entitled to rights like other Bahraini children for education, health care and ownership of land,” said Dr Al Baharna.

As part of the launch, a two-day workshop on gender and nationality will start on Wednesday at the Bahrain Medical Society in Juffair from 8am to noon.

Bahraini women married to foreigners are urged to contact the society on 17826777 or society member Eman Al Asfoor on 39609631.
