Notable Achievements in Jordan’s Campaign
Momentum around the Nationality Campaign is building in Jordan. As the issue receives more attention, the number of achievements begins to grow. Local grassroots actors as well as executive members of Government are working towards women’s equality in Jordan. A few of the notable achievements:
- At the last Arab Summit Queen Rania declared approaches for Jordanians to take in order to work towards guaranteeing women’s equality in relation to the nationality issue. The Queen announced her desire to facilitate women’s efforts at conveying nationality to their children.
- Energy is building around the issue in Parliament and amongst various executive authorities as discussions have been occurring with more frequency.
- Women are becoming more aware of the issue and the consequences of the law.
- Women affected by the nationality law are increasingly asking for help as they are being introduced to organizations that are providing services that offer assistance.
- SIGI/J is continuing to submit letters to appropriate Ministry offices for children to become Jordanian citizens or acquire work permits.
- Amendments to the Nationality Law are being drafted.
Jordan is doing remarkably well in working to put women’s rights on the national agenda. The ten year plan is for Jordan to continue to focus on human rights and ensuring all women are granted the rights they are legally entitled to.
