Mehrangiz Kar, journalist and Iranian women's rights activist, who was jailed in April 2000 for her writings and speeches on women's rights, was allowed to leave Iran for medical treatment for breast cancer in fall 2001. After she arrived in the United States, her husband, journalist Siamak Pourzand, was disappeared. He was brought to the phone a number of times to call Mehrangiz and their daughters Leila and Azadeh to pass on the message that they must refrain from speaking on his behalf and must avoid contact with the media.

Pursuant to extensive consultations with women's groups from across India, in-depth academic research, grassroots action, and experience working with victims of domestic violence, in 2001 the New Delhi-based Lawyers Collective, Women's Rights Initiative (LCWRI) drafted a bill for the prevention of domestic violence against women with unanimous support from numerous Indian women's organizations.

Reza Khandan, Nasrin Sotoodeh's husband, has been detained at Evin prison, after appearing at the prosecutor’s office in response to a summons he received last week. Khandan was summoned to court following the sentencing of his wife, imprisoned lawyer and activist Nasrin Sotoodeh, to 11 years in prison and a 20 year ban from practicing law and travel outside the country.
