Save the Date: October 8-9 WLP’s Conference on Human Security

WLP will host an international conference entitled Clash or Consensus? Gender and Human Security in a Globalized World with the support and cooperation of the Global Fund for Women on October 8-9, 2003. The conference will provide a forum for activists, policy-makers, and leading human security experts from the Global South-particularly from Muslim societies- to explore ways to define and implement human security goals from a perspective that is people-centered and focused on the social, political, economic, and cultural needs and rights of individuals, rather than state-centered concerns. Conference panels will analyze human security issues from a gender perspective and explore ways to implement human security goals through developing cultures of peace, preventing the spread of fundamentalisms and extremism, promoting human rights and sustainable development, and strengthening democratic governance. The conference will take place at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of Johns Hopkins University in Washington, DC. More details

WLP’s 2002 Annual Report Now Available Online

For WLP, 2002 was a time of tremendous growth both in our collaborative network of supporters and partners and in our programming for women in the Global South. Last year, WLP doubled the number of our partners, including new partnerships with established women’s organizations in Cameroon, India, Lebanon, Malaysia, Turkey, and Zimbabwe. WLP also improved and expanded programs and activities on leadership development, human rights, and creating cultures of peace for women in the Global South. More than 1,000 women and girls participated in WLP’s leadership development programs in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The Annual Report summarizes our activities in 2002 as we continue our work to support women’s efforts to take on leadership roles and become active participants in building just societies.
